Cooking with hemp: The basis is decarboxylation

One of the most important steps in cooking with cannabis is decarboxylation. This is because in order to make sugar (or oil, butter or anything else) from cannabis, you must first activate the cannabinoids. The most important process for proper decarboxylation is heat. Basically, this involves roasting the cannabis at a low temperature for about 35-40 minutes.

Making hemp sugar step by step

Making hemp sugar is very simple, you won't even need any special tools or equipment to make it.

Raw materials:

  • 4 g of hemp
  • 150 g crystal sugar
  • 160 ml of high proof alcohol

Procedure:

  1. First, coarsely crush your favourite cannabis variety with a grinder.
  2. The following is the decarboxylation process. Spread the crushed cannabis on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 35-40 minutes at 120 °C. Do not increase the temperature.
  3. Remove the decarboxylated cannabis from the oven. Pour it into a container and cover with alcohol. Screw the lid onto the container and tighten it securely. To speed up extraction, shake the jar every 5 minutes for about 20 minutes.
  4. Then, using a cheese cloth or coffee filter, strain the liquid into a clean container. Stir the sugar into this strained alcohol solution.
  5. Pour the solution into the baking dish. Bake at 93 °C, stirring regularly, until the alcohol has completely evaporated and the sugar is golden.
