We have already informed you in previous articles about the importance of proper fertilization in the cultivation of medicinal cannabis. It is necessary to pay attention to the correct type of fertilizer, as well as the frequency of its use. Excessive fertilization with the help of organic or inorganic fertilizers can be very harmful to plants. They are usually burned and die. Today, however, there will be a completely organic type of fertilizer, namely bat droppings, also called "Guano".

Guano, ie bat droppings , as an effective fertilizer, has been known and widely used for several hundred years. It is considered almost a holy grail among organic types of fertilizers. And it should be noted that deservedly so . Guano is rich in 2 very important elements, namely phosphorus and nitrogen. Just as we currently consume a variety of superfoods, for plants, not just hemp, guano also works as an organic super nutritional bomb .

Why Guano?

The answer is simple. In general, organic fertilizers are simply more beneficial to plants . This is doubly true of cannabis plants, which are grown, for example, for their inflorescences full of therapeutic CBD. After harvesting and drying, these herbs have a much better smell and taste than flowers from a plant that has been fertilized with inorganic, ie synthetic, fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers usually have a large amount of well-absorbed nutrients, and guano is no exception. It hides a really balanced ratio of 3 main nutrients , ie elements that cannabis cannot do without. These are, of course, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) , which you may already know from our previous articles under the abbreviation NPK fertilizer.

But why is bat droppings such an exceptionally great fertilizer with a balanced nutrient ratio? The answer is very easy again. Behind everything is a specific type of diet (we'll talk more in a moment) that bats feed on and, of course, the geography of their occurrence.

Are there different Guano fertilizers?

Yes, they do exist. As we took a bite a moment ago, this difference lies in the diet that a given type of bat eats. As bats, of course, live in different geographical areas, their diets are not the same everywhere. For example, bats living in Indonesia and other tropical areas, such as Jamaica, eat mostly fruit . Therefore, their faeces will be rich in phosphorus , which is important during the flowering phase of the plant.

On the contrary, bats from South America or, for example, Mexico, for example, have various types of insects in their viewfinder , which makes their droppings a fertilizer with a very high nitrogen content . This element is known to be an indispensable part of fertilization during the cannabis growth phase.

If bats feed mainly on fruit, their droppings are mainly rich in phosphorus

Why choose organic universal fertilizers?

The primary advantage of organic fertilizers is, of course, their 100% natural composition . This guarantees plants the intake of pure nutrients, without additives and fillers , which can often be harmful. Many different types of these fertilizers are already on the market today. However, if you come across Guano, there is nothing to hesitate over. It is always the right choice.

Similarly, you can find so-called "universal" fertilizers , which are a mix of bat and bird droppings , specifically the droppings of the Peruvian seabird. These fertilizers have a very well-balanced ratio of basic nutrients and trace elements for both the growth phase and the flowering phase , which makes them really good helpers.

But it certainly makes you wonder, one rather delicate but understandable question. "Won't it stink?" It won't. Although it is animal droppings, the fertilizers are completely odorless. They are usually available in liquid form, but dried granules (also odorless) are no exception. You can fertilize guano with indoor cultivation without any worries.

How to use Guano?

The right choice of mixing ratio for fertilization is important. The ideal ratio is 100 g of dried guano and 2 l of lukewarm water . Stir the mixture until the granulate is completely dissolved. In the next step, take 2 dcl of mixed fertilizer and add to 10 liters of water ready for watering. Remember that the water with which you water medicinal hemp must have the right pH , ie alkalinity, which is key to good plant growth.

Watering with Guano is recommended about twice a week . In the penultimate week before flowering, only supply the plant with clean water, thanks to which the substrate will be purified and the plant will develop its true specific taste and aroma, of course due to the selected variety.

Guano can be purchased in the form of a liquid or loose mixture

Finally, a few recommendations

  1. Observe the correct fertilization frequency and never exceed it.

  2. Remember that guano is an extremely effective fertilizer, and even if it contains a balanced amount of nutrients, its excessive use can seriously damage the plant .

  3. If special types of coloration appear on the plant check the pH of the growing medium and the composition of the fertilizer you are using. This article could help you.

  4. Use guano and other organic fertilizers very carefully!
