Elemi(Canarium luzonicum)

Elemi essential oil is steam distilled from the naturally occurring light yellow resin of the tall tropical trees Canarium luzonicum, which grow wild in the rainforests of the Philippines. Canarium luzonicum grows mainly in the Philippines, where it is traditionally used for body aches and skin ailments, but is also found in South and Central America, Australia, Brazil, India, the Malay Peninsula and the Moluccas.

When the beautiful pale yellow leaves of Elemi begin to flower, the tree produces an exotic honey-like aromatic oleoresin. Elemi is mainly contained in resin channels on the inside of the bark and is produced mainly during the rainy season. The botanical resin solidifies on contact with the air and the tree stops producing it when the last leaf falls. Elemi resin as an antifoulant and for preserving meat was one of the aromatic materials also used by the Egyptians for embalming purposes and was used throughout the Arab and Turkish world in antiquity. Elemi is a member of the Burseraceae family, which includes Frankincense, Myrrh and Opopanax - all resin producers.

Uses of Elemi oil

Widely used in ancient Egypt, the Middle East and later throughout Europe, Elemi has a long history of use in medicinal and cosmetic preparations. Elemi oil helps support healthy lung function, especially if a person experiences a spastic cough or clogged breathing. Elemi deeply nourishes and regenerates the skin.
