Lemon grass(Cymbopogon flexuosus)

Lemongrass essential oil is steam distilled from the rich, spicy green grasses of the Cymbopogon flexuosus plant grown in rural South India. It is a fine variety of Lemongrass with a wonderfully bold, lemony aroma; and exceptional therapeutic properties.

A tall, hardy plant, Lemongrass has a mild citrus flavor and is used in Asian cuisine in soups, teas and curries, as well as with fish, poultry, beef and seafood.

Lemongrass essential oil is naturally composed of 70% Geranial and Neral aldehydes, which are also collectively known as Citral. There are two main varieties of lemon grass: East Indian lemon grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), also called Cochin grass or Malabar grass, and West Indian lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus). While both can be used interchangeably, West Indian Lemongrass is more suitable for cooking; however, East Indian Lemongrass has a higher solubility in alcohol and is therefore largely used in the perfume industry.

Uses of lemongrass oil

In addition to helping to reduce unwanted bacteria, microbes, or mold, lemongrass essential oil is also known to help manage minor aches and pains and inflammation, relieve situational depression, and help promote healthy digestion. In skin care applications, lemongrass essential oil is used for its astringent properties. Its limonene content can help dissolve excess sebum. It also cleanses and tones the skin and is often used in skin care products for these benefits. Due to its high citral and geraniol content, East Indian lemongrass oil is known to repel insects such as mosquitoes and ants.

Emotionally and energetically, lemongrass essential oil can bring comfort during difficult emotional transitions and boost motivation during periods of anxiety, stress and depression. The stimulating and refreshing aroma is also uplifting and relaxing, helping to reduce fatigue and energize the mind. When diffused or used in an aroma inhaler, lemongrass oil can help promote concentration and provide energy.
