Are Ants a Problem When Growing Cannabis?
If you discover ants on or around cannabis plants, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. Ants actually form an important part of every garden ecosystem. They aerate the soil and help break down dead insects.
However, ants can sometimes cause problems for growers. If you see many ants on cannabis plants, it may indicate an infestation. Ants can damage cannabis in the following ways:
- damaging plant root systems,
- affecting the quality of buds.
Ants typically appear on cannabis alongside aphids. They feed on the sweet secretions from these creatures and spider mites. If ants discover a colony of these creatures on plants, they may protect the plants by eliminating them. However, their numbers can increase, which may lead to a problem.
Signs of Ant Infestation in Cannabis Plants
As mentioned, ants are commonly found in a healthy ecosystem. Seeing ants in your garden doesn't necessarily mean an infestation has occurred. Signs of infestation include:

- soil mounds near the plants,
- pale, wilting plants,
- high numbers of aphids and spider mites.
How to Get Rid of Ants on Cannabis?
When eliminating ants from cannabis, avoid using aggressive chemicals and pesticides. These methods are more likely to harm the plants. Fortunately, there are safer, ecological ways to deal with ants. Here are some of them:
Cinnamon or Ground Coffee
Ants do not like cinnamon or ground coffee. If you want to use ground cinnamon, find the area where ants appear and simply sprinkle one tablespoon of cinnamon. This will deter ants and prevent them from returning. If that doesn't help, try mixing cinnamon or ground coffee with water (use the same amount you normally water plants), and then evenly water the soil. Once the cinnamon or coffee gets into the soil, it should force the ants to scatter away.
Cornmeal
Cornmeal has a rough texture that is abrasive and will kill ants upon ingestion. Sprinkle some cornmeal into the ant holes. The bodies of dead ants will also decompose in the soil, providing additional nutrients to the plants.
Neem Oil
Neem oil is undoubtedly the best helper for cannabis growers, as it contains effective insecticidal substances and is gentle to nature. It can be applied directly to plants as a pesticide or used preventively once a week. Neem oil does not harm beneficial creatures like ladybugs, bees, and earthworms, and can also be added to irrigation water to prevent root rot. Simply pour it around the plants to repel ants and other pests.
Beneficial Insects
Ants feed on some types of insects, including wasps, spiders, and certain butterfly species. However, ants live in large numbers, and inviting beneficial insects will likely not be enough to destroy their colony. Moreover, ants protect their colonies from other predatory insect species.
Garlic
Make a spray from garlic cloves, ½ cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon organic liquid soap, and 2 liters of water. Spray this mixture directly on ant-infested areas.
