Cannabis and Tourette's Syndrome

Tourette's syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. It is a serious condition, and patients can cause serious injuries to themselves due to tics and seizures. Estimates say that approximately 100,000 people have this syndrome in the United States. Currently, there is no cure, but patients claim that symptoms diminish as they get older.

German studies from 1997 showed that patients with Tourette's syndrome experience a reduction in both frequency and intensity of tics and related behaviors when using THC, the active substance in cannabis. None of these studies demonstrated any cognitive function impairment.

More recent studies were conducted in 2003. In this study, patients were given THC for six weeks, or a placebo effect was established. During this period, a significant decrease in tics was observed, without side effects and without negative impacts on memory and learning ability.

Today, the use of medical marijuana to treat Tourette's syndrome is still not legal, even in countries where cannabis is approved for other conditions. Traditional treatment is ineffective, and when it works, it comes with frequent side effects, so cannabis could be a good therapeutic alternative.
