CBD and Fertility: Can It Help with Conception?

Infertility is an increasingly widespread problem. Statistics speak clearly: in the Czech Republic, 20% of couples struggle with infertility, and the number continues to grow. In practice, this means that every fourth couple has conception problems, and these people are seeking various alternatives to combat infertility. How does CBD oil perform in this field?

What is CBD?

Gradual decriminalization of cannabis has allowed closer examination and analysis of its healing abilities. Marijuana contains a large amount of cannabinoids, the most well-known being THC and CBD. THC affects our mind, which is why it remains taboo, and cannabis with THC content higher than 0.3% is still prohibited for recreational use.

But what about CBD? We know that it has no intoxicating effects. And precisely for this reason, its use is not prohibited, and people are increasingly interested in its medical potential. No wonder, as CBD has already proven its usefulness in treating many diseases, such as:

And we could continue this list. But today we'll look at fertility and how CBD performs in relation to it.

CBD and Fertility

The cannabinoid CBD can act on our body through the endocannabinoid system, whose receptors are located throughout our body. One of the places where endocannabinoid receptors are found is the female reproductive tract and sperm in men. And how can the interaction of CBD with these receptors help with fertility?

Anandamide – The Key to Success

Doctors have noticed that the ability to get pregnant is influenced by anandamide. We naturally have it in our body, and its high level is very important because it increases the chance of pregnancy. When its level decreases, the chance of successful pregnancy is lower.

And how is CBD related? CBD prevents the breakdown of this anandamide using its FAAH enzyme, and the chance of pregnancy is higher.

Can CBD Harm Conception Efforts?

And here we encounter the first problem. At the moment when the process succeeds and the fertilized egg tries to nest in the uterus, our body actually needs a low level of anandamide! If the level is too high, the egg anchoring process will not occur as it should, and the pregnancy is endangered. Using CBD while trying to conceive must be very carefully monitored. Timing is crucial.

Another Connection Between CBD and Fertility

We all know that fertility does not depend solely on anandamide. There are other, far more important factors. Often, infertility is caused by things like stress, depression, or anxiety.

While in men, infertility is caused by dysfunctional sperm, in women, the list of factors is truly long. We already know that CBD can help with pressure, pain, or poor sleep. Moreover, it can act on serotonin receptors that take care of our good mood and overall harmony and satisfaction.

By reducing stress levels, we achieve several successes. When the female body is uncomfortable, stress can reduce hormone production necessary for proper egg formation. In men, stress and the resulting limited hormone production similarly affect sperm production.

CBD oil can be added to drinks

CBD Usage Forms

Using CBD oil is the most common form of consuming CBD cannabinoid. Its extract is combined with a carrier oil. This CBD oil is then most often dropped under the tongue, allowing it to quickly release into the body. It can also be added to a favorite drink.

Another option is capsules. Here, the onset is slower because the capsules must be broken down and digested in the liver.

Another form, and simultaneously a form definitely not recommended for conception purposes, is smoking or vaping CBD. Smoking produces ammonia and many other toxins that can negatively affect our body.

Cannabis Use During Pregnancy

It is definitely not appropriate to use cannabis or any separated cannabinoid during pregnancy! No study has yet sided with using cannabis during pregnancy. During the 1st trimester, the most important formation and development of the child occurs, and such interventions can directly affect it.

Although some women use cannabis for pregnancy nausea, it is not correct, and remember that it can damage the fetus or affect its development.

Moreover, cannabis use during pregnancy more frequently leads to premature births, which can have fatal consequences for the mother's and child's health. While normally, premature birth occurs in 6% of women, in the case of cannabis users, this amount is double, at 12.1%.

Regarding CBD, it is often used by mothers suffering from depression during pregnancy. In this regard, be cautious and always consult with your doctor. Even though CBD is not intoxicating, no study has demonstrated its 100% safe use during pregnancy.

Choose or Not Choose CBD When Trying to Conceive?

People desire pregnancy and are willing to do anything. But in desperate attempts, they often do not distinguish between facts and misinformation. Therefore, it must be said that so far, no extensive scientific study has provided a clear guide on whether and how CBD helps with fertility.

We have outlined that CBD does indeed have potential and that it has a beneficial effect on our body. This cannabinoid can influence many factors that often complicate successful conception, including stress, anxiety, and bad mood.

If you are among those who have trouble conceiving and want to choose CBD for treatment, we definitely recommend first consulting with your doctor and carefully discussing dosage. You can then choose from a wide range of high-quality oils.
