CBD as an Antibiotic: Can It Fight Antibiotic Resistance?
Many diseases are raging in the world, which are becoming highly resistant to antibiotics. A new study reveals the potential of CBD in effectively fighting antibiotic resistance.
Due to promising evidence of CBD for numerous health problems, people have become too eager to believe it is a panacea. This situation leads to utopian thinking.
Although CBD offers a really wide range of confirmed health benefits, it is normal that each new statement receives considerable skepticism. Perhaps the most ambitious claim is that CBD could work as an effective weapon against antibiotic resistance.
This problem is not new - it is a growing global healthcare issue since 2015. Bacteria have mutated, becoming resistant to drugs. Consequently, a large number of antibiotics are completely ineffective. This means these bacteria are almost impossible to treat.
An Unusual Approach
Through a series of test tube experiments, scientists from University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience discovered that CBD is capable of killing many types of bacteria. Even those like VRSA, VISA, and MRSA.
"Over the years, these bacteria have developed a resistant layer, but showed no resistance to CBD."
Scientists left CBD and mentioned bacteria together for 20 days. Then it was found that CBD substances managed to "outsmart" these bacteria, completely stopping their development. Mark Blaskovic, the lead researcher, mentioned that there is no doubt that CBD has a unique mechanism fighting resistant bacteria, but admitted that how this mechanism works is still unknown.
Combining Antibiotics and CBD
A August experiment by British scientists focused more on how this unique mechanism works.
They focused on the Escherichia coli bacteria, especially its membrane vesicles used for communication and reproduction. During this, they discovered that antibiotics provide prevention from these vesicles coming to life, and CBD further enhances this function. This means CBD can be effective in fighting specific bacteria when combined with suitable antibiotics.
CBD may not be a 100% solution by itself, but with an ideal combination it can fight antibiotic resistance.

Bacterial Resistance
Both studies confirmed the ability of CBD as a weapon against antibiotic resistance, thereby gaining interest from healthcare facilities and popular media.
CBD can disrupt fluid layers (biofilm) surrounding bacterial cells. Antibiotics have great difficulty penetrating this layer, thus creating antibiotic resistance.
Australian scientists found CBD is effective against gram-positive bacteria causing diseases like pneumonia or skin infections. During this, they discovered it is not effective against mentioned bacteria associated with gastrointestinal issues like salmonella and Escherichia Coli.
British scientists advanced research on Escherichia Coli, but deeper research is still needed.
Beyond Laboratory Tubes
All discoveries were released at the June conference of American Society for Microbiology's Microbe. Although the research is already very promising, it remains in its infancy and still stays in laboratory tubes.
Therefore, scientists warn that more time and work are needed to clarify that CBD can truly treat infections. More serious infectious issues need to be subjected to deeper experiments, so it would be dangerous to immediately replace them with cannabidiol.
The CBD market is literally blooming - CBD extract currently costs 2000 dollars/kilo, while four years ago it cost an incredible 20,000 dollars per kilo. The only problem is that science unfortunately cannot keep pace with the market and its demand.
Undeniable evidence is already available and it's just a matter of time before CBD can be used as a weapon against antibiotic resistance.
