CBD during pregnancy

Cannabidiol (CBD) is no longer a novelty, and many people have already incorporated its use into their daily routines. A very sensitive topic is CBD consumption during pregnancy, which is related to the question of its impact on fetal development and potentially on the child's development after birth. One of the most beautiful periods in a woman's life also brings many discomforts that are potentially solvable under normal circumstances by using cannabidiol. However, is it appropriate for women in this phase to expose their child to cannabinoid effects?

The issue of cannabis use during pregnancy and whether this behavior can affect fetal health certainly burdens many current and future families.

Fortunately, there are results from a 2015 study published in the journal "Obstetrics & Gynecology". Researchers in this study focused primarily on the impact of cannabis use during pregnancy and its subsequent effect on the child's weight and conception time. The final conclusion of the scientists is as follows: "If the mother only applies cannabis during pregnancy and excludes other drugs, especially alcohol and tobacco, she need not fear specific problems such as premature birth or unstable child weight."

Until now, there has been great uncertainty around the effects of medicinal cannabis during pregnancy, especially due to many conflicting studies that addressed this issue in the past. According to researchers, this confusion stemmed mainly from inadequate separation of confounding variables and factors that ultimately created correlations even though no real causal relationship actually existed between them.

Simply put, tobacco consumption is a very important variable, but determining whether premature birth was caused by tobacco, cannabis, or both together is more complicated.

Cannabis Without THC

Cannabis without the intoxicating THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), or CBD cannabis, has been a hit in recent years, especially for its use in medicine. With growing popularity, studies proving its potential therapeutic effects are increasing. This type of cannabis plant is primarily represented by CBD, followed by CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), and others. All cannabinoids without exception interact with the endocannabinoid system, which occurs not only in humans but also in some vertebrates and invertebrate animals.

The long list of CBD effects can convince us that this cannabinoid certainly deserves attention. It's important to note how the endocannabinoid system (ECS) differs from person to person. This means that two seemingly identical people may not necessarily have the same response to cannabidiol. Among the most well-known effects are pain reduction, anxiety relief, improved response to oxidative stress, reduced seizure frequency in epilepsy, muscle relaxation, and neuroprotectivity. In addition to anti-inflammatory, antipsychotic, antibacterial, and anticonvulsant abilities, it also serves as a supportive medication for various diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, or substance addiction.

Note: In the Czech Republic, cannabis with THC content higher than 1% is restricted by law. Legislation in other countries may differ. Please note that the article is for informational purposes only and does not encourage readers to use it.
