CBD vs. CBN: A New Trend in 2021

Both of these substances belong to the group of cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. The abbreviation CBD stands for cannabidiol. When marijuana is mentioned, one inevitably thinks of the intoxicating effect of THC contained in the cannabis plant. However, not all cannabinoids have this mind-altering effect. CBD, which is often used as a CBD oil, has numerous positive effects and is therefore increasingly used for medical purposes. For this reason, the medical trend of therapeutic cannabis has significantly expanded here. However, the cannabinoid CBN is also increasingly coming to the forefront. CBN is one of more than 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. CBN is remarkably similar to CBD, but also has some unique effects. Let's take a closer look.

CBD and Its Effects

To make convincing conclusions, various studies still need to be conducted, but overall, interest in CBD component research is very high. However, many studies have already examined the mechanism of cannabidiol's action. Based on these studies, some assumptions could be confirmed. Particularly, the effect of CBD on supporting sleep was confirmed, as CBD has a calming effect on the entire nervous system. Additionally, an anticonvulsant effect can be demonstrated. The same applies to regeneration support. Scientists from Nottingham University studied the effect of CBD on reducing blood pressure in stressful situations. They found that after consuming 600 mg of CBD, test subjects' heart rates decreased, supporting a calming phase. In Uruguay, scientists administered CBD in doses of 50 and 150 mg twice daily to kidney transplant patients. It turned out that test subjects experienced significantly less pain.
Although further studies are still needed, CBD oil has been legally usable for competitive athletes to improve regeneration for several years. WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) removed pure CBD from the list of banned doping substances. Do you remember when you first heard about the cannabinoid CBD and how drastically the view on medicinal cannabis changed due to the discovery of this non-psychoactive cannabis component? And who could forget the subsequent discoveries of therapeutic effects for patients suffering from chronic pain or inflammation, not to mention children suffering from epileptic seizures, who were literally given a chance at a normal life through extracts from CBD-rich varieties.

What is CBN?

CBN was the first cannabinoid isolated from the cannabis plant. Like CBD, CBN does not have an intoxicating effect but acts gently sedatively. Although scientists have known about CBN's mechanism of action for some time, it is only now coming into the spotlight. Various studies have meanwhile shown that CBN has its own spectrum of effects. Like CBD, this cannabinoid also has great therapeutic potential in pain relief and sleep disorders. However, CBN is said to have additional healing properties. These include primarily antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant effects. Moreover, CBN is said to have an appetite-stimulating effect when combined with other cannabinoids and cannabis components.
Particularly notable and characteristic of CBN is its sedative effect. Therefore, it is said that 5 mg of CBN is as effective as 10 mg of diazepam (benzodiazepine). There are studies indicating that cannabinol is up to ten times less psychoactive than THC. For this reason, it is also considered suitable for sleep disorders.
