CBDA vs. CBD - What Are the Differences?

Cannabidiolic acid, known as CBDA, could have some promising properties to support overall well-being and might even be more effective than the increasingly popular CBD.

In this article, you'll get answers to questions like what CBDA is and what the difference between CBDA and CBD is.

What is CBDA?

CBDA is a non-psychoactive acidic compound that is used to create CBD. Research on CBDA is still in a very early stage, even more so than CBD, which is why not all effects on the body are yet known.

All cannabinoids start as CBGA (Cannabigerolic acid). This acid is often referred to as the "building block of cannabinoids". As the hemp plant matures, CBGA breaks down into other cannabinoid acids, including CBDA and THCA.

CBDA is cannabidiolic acid, or the acidic version of CBD. When exposed to sunlight and oxygen, CBDA breaks down into CBD in a process called decarboxylation. During decarboxylation, CBDA loses its acidic hydroxyl group - a group of atoms composed of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. This transforms cannabidiolic acid into an acid. By removing this group, CBDA changes into CBD.
Because this process takes a longer time, the finished CBD product may still contain a certain amount of CBDA and other acidic cannabinoids. Therefore, if you use a product with broad or full-spectrum CBD oil, such as a tincture, CBDA is likely present.

What is the difference between CBDA and CBD?

  • CBDA is one of the most common cannabinoids in the hemp plant, but after extraction, CBD is much more abundant.

  • CBDA could be more effective than CBD.

  • They affect the endocannabinoid system differently (ECS) - CBDA and CBD have different effects on the endocannabinoid system. Although they may be structurally similar, the role they play in the body is very different and worth exploring.

  • Like CBD, CBDA is not psychoactive, so it does not alter your mental state.

CBD olej a tinktura může mít přirozený obsah CBDA, v závislosti na typu přípravy
  • CBD can be heated unlike CBDA, making it more suitable for cooking and vaping - many CBD users use vape pens as an easy way to incorporate CBD into their daily routine.

  • CBD is much more stable, because cannabidiolic acid can break down into CBD, even when left at room temperature. Therefore, when purchasing CBD oil, it is less likely that the CBD percentage will decrease over time compared to CBDA.

What are the benefits of CBDA vs. CBD?

Benefits of CBD

  • Many more studies have been conducted on CBD's effects on the body

  • CBD is more accessible in commercial products

  • Many of CBDA's research findings have also been found in CBD

  • CBD is suitable for cooking, smoking, vaping, and other heat treatments

CBD lze užívat vícero způsoby, například přidáním do čaje, čímž se narozsíl od CBDA nesníží jeho obsah

Benefits of CBDA

  • CBDA might have a stronger effect on the endocannabinoid system than CBD

  • Fewer processes are involved in CBDA's creation, making it a more natural product than CBD

  • Like CBD, CBDA is non-psychoactive, which means it will not change your mental state, so you can use it anytime during the day without worrying about negative side effects

CBD produkty lze tepelně upravit, aniž by se jejich obsah snížil

CBDA seems to have great potential in terms of positive effects on humans. However, compared to CBD, it is very unstable with increasing temperature, and therefore is more suitable as a supplement in non-heat-treated foods like smoothies.
