Germination Test: Wet vs. Soaked Hemp Seeds

What is the best method for hemp seed germination? Let's continue our germination test series with a crucial question: Should seeds be placed in wet conditions, or is it better to completely soak them to ensure the highest germination rate and fastest seed sprouting? The answer might surprise you!

Video About Hemp Seed Germination in Wet vs. Soaked Seeds

To assess wet vs. soaked germination conditions, we conducted a side-by-side germination test with Cannapio seeds. We attempted to germinate 15 hemp seeds in soaked conditions and 15 seeds in wet conditions. Does adding too much water help improve hemp seed germination, or does this technique dramatically negatively impact sprouting?

The video below exactly shows what happened.

As the video shows, perfect germination occurred when hemp seeds were sprouted between lightly sprayed (i.e., wet) cotton pads. All 15 seeds germinated perfectly. However, from 15 seeds placed between soaked (saturated) cotton pads, only 3 seeds survived. The others showed brown coloration on the root tip, indicating that the root began to rot in waterlogged conditions.

How Much Water Should You Use for Hemp Seed Germination?

In our Cannapio hemp seed germination experiment of "wet vs. soaked", several simple cotton swabs were used. This is usually a reliable seed germination method, whether you use feminized seeds, regular seeds, or autoflowering seeds. Note that for successful seed germination in wet conditions, minimal water was used that brought the best results. Only 3 light water mist sprays were applied to each cotton pad.

Advantages and Logic of Germinating Hemp Seeds in Wet Conditions

For the 15 hemp seeds that successfully germinated in wet conditions, we lightly sprayed the cotton pads (3 times on the bottom pad, 3 times on the top pad).

The key principle of germination is that hemp seeds need only a small amount of moisture to soften their shell and allow the root to grow in a moist, oxygenated environment. Once the root appears, access to oxygen is as important as access to moisture. At this stage, the root needs very little moisture.

Disadvantages and Problems of Germinating Hemp Seeds in Oversaturated Conditions

Of the 15 hemp seeds attempting to germinate in soaked cotton pads, only 3 survived. This is because waterlogged conditions simply did not provide enough oxygen for root growth.

Both top and bottom cotton pads were soaked in water, and seeds were placed between them. Soaking allowed softening and opening of the shells. However, once roots began appearing, most simply started rotting and dying. You can most easily recognize this by the brown coloration of the root tip.

This is usually a sign of root damage and is often fatal for newly germinated seeds. Even if the seedling survives, root damage can permanently stunt the plant, allowing only small, unproductive growth.

How to Germinate and Sow Seeds

There are many different ways to germinate hemp seeds. However, we should realize that marijuana seeds have found ways to germinate for thousands of years without human intervention.

Recently, with home hemp cultivation becoming quite widespread, many growers strive to achieve the highest possible germination rate. If you buy the best hemp seeds at premium prices, you might achieve high seed germination. However, it's always necessary to treat seeds as natural material and always anticipate potential germination failure caused by nature.

From the results of this test, we recommend the CBD hemp seed germination method using cotton pads. Remember to lightly spray the top and bottom cotton pads, each only three times, to create wet conditions. Adding more water and soaking the cotton pads will only reduce the germination rate.
