Creativity and Cannabis: Myth or Fact? (Study Summary)

Increased creativity in connection with hemp is something almost everyone has heard about today. But how much truth is there in this claim? Is it possible for cannabinoids in hemp to have such power and drive our productivity and creative thinking? Today's article will examine this topic very thoroughly, so to speak, "down to the details".

Several research studies and laboratory studies have already addressed this topic in the past, and the effectiveness of hemp on creativity continues to be investigated. At this point, there is evidence suggesting that creativity and hemp are indeed connected. In what way? That is the right question. And there are many discussions about its answer. However, for now, we have these findings available.

Brain Blood Flow as a Path to Creativity

Neurological research has long shown that the center of creativity is the frontal lobe of the brain. Using certain types of hemp, especially Cannabis sativa, affects increased blood flow to this part of the brain, and thus an increase in activity in the frontal lobe. This claim is also mentioned by Jasen Talise in the Berkeley Medical Journal, based on a 1992 study whose results were re-verified 10 years later in another study in 2002.

The frontal lobe also serves as a center for a specific type of thinking, namely "creative divergent thinking". Divergent thinking represents a kind of thought process. This way of thinking is very important for creativity, as it supports the development of new original solutions to a given problem.

"Yes" to Low Doses

When it comes to hemp and creativity, proper dosage is absolutely crucial. A study published in 2014 and 2015 came to this conclusion. During the study, participants were given hemp products containing THC, with a very low content of up to 5.5 mg. This amount showed a slight improvement in two key aspects of the mentioned divergent thinking:

  1. New ideas came fluently and in increased quantities

  2. Participants showed a large number of different and quite unique responses, demonstrating flexibility in thinking about the problem

Higher doses of the cannabinoid THC, 22 mg, did not support further creativity development. On the contrary, there was a significant reduction in the ability to rationally think about the issue.

NOTE: Hemp varieties with THC content higher than 0.3% are restricted by law in the Czech Republic. Legal handling of THC is only permitted for medical and scientific purposes, exclusively by verified institutions with proper authorization. This article serves solely for education about hemp. It does not aim to encourage consumption of illegal hemp varieties.
