Fibromyalgia, or the Constant Feeling of Fatigue.

  • Fibromyalgia is a serious nervous system disorder
  • Causes chronic fatigue, joint pain, limb and head pain, digestive issues, restlessness, overall weakness
  • Over 60% of patients consider medical cannabis to be a highly effective treatment
  • Studies prove that cannabis works better than pharmaceuticals in fibromyalgia cases

Fibromyalgia is a relatively unknown but serious central nervous system disorder that causes pain and, in most cases, constant fatigue, limb stiffness, and insomnia, which can ultimately result in additional mental disorders. Patients suffering from this condition are often unable to effectively perform routine household tasks. Ordinary cleaning or meal preparation can become seemingly insurmountable challenges.

You can check out the blog of Teri Robnett, an advocate for patients treating themselves with cannabis from Denver, the capital of Colorado, who herself suffers from fibromyalgia.

"Sometimes there were days when I thought I just couldn't handle it. I felt like the only thing I could do was fall back into bed and cry the day away."

Just a decade ago, many doctors still refused to believe that fibromyalgia was a real disease and it was mostly considered simple "hypochondria of hysterical women". Unfortunately, the situation has not completely changed, and fibromyalgia is still often misunderstood and commonly misdiagnosed.

Fibromyalgia, often described as a chronic pain syndrome, is a much more complex neurological disorder that can cause joint stiffness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, overall weakness, headaches, digestive issues, restlessness, and the so-called "Fibro fog", which is a comprehensive disruption of the cognitive system.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

While the causes of fibromyalgia development are still a subject of extensive scientific debate, Dr. Ethan Russo, a prominent neurologist and pharmacologist who has dedicated most of his career to the endocannabinoid system, believes that the occurrence of fibromyalgia may be due to the so-called "clinical endocannabinoid deficiency". (CECD - Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency)

The body's endocannabinoid system can be imagined as an internal internet or communication network that the human body uses to communicate between the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune system cells.

If the function of the endocannabinoid system is disrupted, the entire body suffers. This instability can cause a range of problems that are, surprisingly, identical to the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Cannabis as a Treatment for Fibromyalgia

Since fibromyalgia is currently an incurable disease, many sufferers are now curiously looking into cannabis treatment. Teri Robnett, mentioned earlier, is one such case.

Teri realized after some time following a car accident in 1987, which triggered her fibromyalgia case, that the disruption of her endocannabinoid system might be to blame, and that cannabis treatment could help. However, this hopeful discovery was quickly replaced by anger. "How can the government deny me the only thing my body cannot produce on its own and that could help me?"

Until 2009, when Teri first began experimenting with medical cannabis, doctors prescribed her various pharmaceuticals. However, their side effects and concerns about potential consequences of mixing different substances completely discouraged her from using them.

"In 2009, I started self-treating with cannabis. By the end of 2011, I no longer needed any pharmaceuticals and to this day, I treat myself exclusively with cannabis."

"At first, the treatment was a bit of trial and error, but it didn't take long for me to realize that the effects of cannabis were much better for me than the pharmaceuticals I had been taking before. Fibromyalgia symptoms change with the seasons and from day to day. Among other things, medical cannabis allows me to adjust the dosage according to my current needs, and I have a choice of many strains, so I can choose exactly what effect I need most at the moment."

Forms of Administration

At night, Robnett mainly applies cannabis in the form of edibles, whose effect is longer-lasting and allows her to sleep peacefully through the entire night. "A long and restful sleep is very important to me, symptoms are milder after a good night's sleep." Since she has to wait for the effect of orally administered medication, Robnett begins her routine by vaporizing some of the heavier Indica strains, such as the famous Skywalker.

During the day, to minimize psychoactive effects, Robnett chooses a higher CBD ratio and lower THC ratio. "One of the symptoms of fibromyalgia is chronic fatigue syndrome, and I feel that a higher CBD ratio helps me get energy for the whole day."

Medical Cannabis vs. Pharmaceuticals

Robnett is not the only case where cannabis helps with fibromyalgia. In 2014, the National Pain Foundation conducted a study involving more than 1,300 fibromyalgia patients, of whom 30% reported using cannabis for self-treatment.

These nearly 400 patients were then asked to compare the effectiveness of cannabis treatment compared to prescribed pharmaceuticals:

  • 62% described cannabis as a "very effective" treatment method
  • 33% considered cannabis a "good treatment assistance"
  • Only 5% of patients responded that cannabis did not help them

Interesting is also the comparison with a study where patients compared the effects of prescribed pharmaceuticals:

  • Only 8% considered prescribed pharmaceuticals effective
  • 68% described pharmaceuticals as "completely ineffective"

These results are of course very encouraging for all cannabis treatment advocates, but don't keep them to yourself. There are still many people separated from these tremendous cannabis benefits by social stigma. If you know someone who could benefit from cannabis, don't hesitate to share this information with them.

Strains for Fibromyalgia Treatment

In conclusion, we recommend a few strains that are ideal for treating fibromyalgia. However, remember that everyone reacts differently to medical cannabis, so some personal experimentation is necessary to find the right strain for you.

First is the already mentioned strain Skywalker, a mix of Blueberry and Mazara, a heavy Indica ideal for evening treatment. This strain guarantees both a quality antidepressant effect and improved sleep quality.

Further, for example, Pineapple Chunk, a pineapple hybrid Pineapple X Skunk X Cheese with predominantly Indica genetics. Don't be fooled, most users describe this model as highly energetic, which also works very well against pain and stress. Pineapple Chunk is therefore ideal for daytime treatment.

Another very popular hybrid, Black Widow from the seedbank of legendary smuggler Mr.Nice (R.I.P.) is also a very suitable strain. Its relaxing effects mixed with euphoria are suitable for evening use.

And lastly, we'll mention the very popular Critical + 2.0, another strain ideal for daytime use. After applying this strain rich in intense pine and lemon flavor, you'll especially feel stimulating and euphoric effects, perfect for enhancing household chores.

All these and many other strains can be found in our e-shop's offering.
