G13 - legendary Afghan cannabis

Only a select few champions among widely available cannabis strains have managed to accumulate such a legendary reputation as the mysterious cannabis strain known as G13. This genetics also found its way into American cinemas, which apparently contributes to an even greater mysticism surrounding this plant.

Origin of G13

Where exactly does it come from? Is its lineage truly real?

This question has been mentioned in several professional discussions. By following the faint trace left behind by this plant, we arrive at a time around 1970 in the United States of America, where this legendary plant probably originated.

According to the most credible story, written by an author with the nickname Jessy for the magazine Treat Yourself, this plant was allegedly stolen directly from a government research facility at the University of Mississippi in the USA. The strain labeled G13 was supposedly part of a government project led by a certain Dr. Carlton Turner, from where it was subsequently stolen.

One thing we know with certainty. That a certain Mr. Neville Schoenmakers (owner and founder of several seed banks in Holland) one day got a clone labeled G13 in his hands. However, opinions on how this happened vary greatly. Apparently, these seeds were passed by a certain Sandy Weinstein, who allegedly had a friend working for government research at the Mississippi station. The label G13 was reportedly found only on one batch among many Afghan-origin strains labeled from G1 to G23. The clone labeled G13 was much better than all its siblings. Fast growth, rapid internal flowering, massive resin production, excellent flower potency, and extreme hybrid vigor.

Another theory is a possibly true story about a man named Michael Hallman, who during the 1960s and 1970s acquired many high-quality cannabis strains in the USA. After his arrest, all his strains ended up in the possession of CIA and FBI agents and were later possibly used in breeding the notorious G13 in secret US government laboratories.

Analysis of Cannabis Strain G13

With an alleged content of more than 28 percent THC, this strain ranks among the strongest cannabis strains of the present time. Information about the immediate THC content can sometimes be quite controversial. Research conducted at the University of Mississippi as part of the Marijuana Potency Measurement (MPM) project showed no data with potency values higher than 9.5%, which is actually a very low threshold compared to most other commercially available cannabis strains. PharmChem Inc. laboratories also tested selected G13 strains for some time but never concluded that THC values exceed 14%. People who personally tried one of the G13 strains, on the other hand, reported that it seemed very strong. These discrepancies may point to a different source other than the US government and its secret laboratories in Mississippi.

There are many theories about where this strange label G13 came from and what the letter and number actually mean. It is suggested that the letter G is an abbreviation for "government" and that the number 13 is simply the designation of a genetic line that achieved the highest potential and quality. Another theory claims that G13 is an abbreviation for a secret room in a government research institute labeled as "Greenhouse number 13", from where this plant was allegedly liberated in the past.

In any case, this plant has accumulated many legends over time, and the current cannabis seed market offers many Indian hemp hybrids carrying authentic G13 strain genes. However, regardless of genetic origin, one thing is certain. There can be no original G13 strains in seed form because only female clones reached Dr. Neville.

In Conclusion

We would like to mention three credible sources where even an average grower can get their hands on one of the legendary G13 hybrids. One source is the Dutch seed bank Sensi Seeds. The second source is Mr. Nice Seedbank, Barneys Farm, and finally Soma Seeds.

The G13 lineage is said to be purely of Afghan origin, but there is currently no way to definitively determine the exact genetic line of the variety and whether it is truly purely of Indian hemp. G13 plants, however, exhibit distinct characteristics of Indian hemp, so this assumption remains the most probable for now. Some of the most remarkable creations by seed banks that were created by crossing with other strains were varieties G13 x Ortega, G13 x Hashplant, G13 x Northern Lights # 2, G13 Haze x G13 x Skunk and # 1.
