Is it safe to use cannabis before and after surgery? What do experts say?

Medical cannabis is known for its anti-inflammatory effects and, among other things, also reduces pain, which is a welcome effect after a procedure. However, is its use suitable before and after surgery? Are there any risks that could complicate the procedure or prolong recovery time? We'll discuss that today...

Not all cannabis is the same: Why?

Although awareness about cannabis is growing, there are still people who are not entirely clear about the difference between cannabis with THC content > 1% (legally restricted) and cannabis with THC content < 1% and so-called CBD cannabis varieties (legal). So let's make a quick overview of how they differ:

1. Cannabis with THC (over 1%)

  • Contains more than 100 different types of cannabinoids, but the difference is in the high THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content

  • THC is psychoactive and affects human perception

  • THC content above the permitted 1% threshold

  • Legal only by prescription (pain treatment, etc.)

  • In the Czech Republic, legally prohibited to grow, possess, distribute, and use this type of cannabis. Exceptions are state-established cultivation facilities with permission from the relevant authorities

2. Cannabis without THC (max. 1%) and CBD varieties

  • LEGAL

  • THC content up to a maximum of 1%.

  • Also contains 100 other cannabinoids in various proportions

  • CBD is the most prominently represented substance

  • CBD is not psychoactive and therefore does not affect human perception or behavior

  • CBD effects - pain relief, treatment of insomnia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, muscle relaxation, or anxiolytic and antioxidant effects
