Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and CBD Effects

From mental disorders, we have chosen OCD, which troubles many people daily. The good news is that there is a way to get OCD under control and enjoy a more free life. Yes, we mean the effect of cannabidiol. To what extent can CBD help with this disorder? Read on...

What is OCD?

OCD is an acronym for obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is classified among mental disorders where a person has a strong need to do a certain thing, we can talk about an obsession or an uncontrollable urge. This thing does not necessarily make sense. A typical and good example of OCD is constantly checking whether we have forgotten to lock, turn off the iron, etc. Theoretically, a person can live with it without more serious problems, just sometimes it will be a bit more difficult. It depends on the degree of the disorder. OCD also affects men and women, and usually develops at the beginning of adulthood.

How do I know if someone has OCD?

Essentially, we have already mentioned the symptoms in the paragraph above. It is about being regularly haunted by:
  • Strong urge – repeated mental behavior that will prompt you to mitigate the obsessive thought
  • Obsession – a regularly occurring thought in our consciousness, which can make us feel anxious or helpless

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can suddenly arise during our life. Its causes are not entirely clear, but it can be a mix of several factors, including family history, brain differences, life events. Last but not least, sometimes the personality of the individual can be behind OCD. If a person has a greater tendency towards perfectionism, excessive care, they may have a higher risk of developing OCD.

Can CBD Help with OCD?

Scientists have obtained evidence that a dysfunction of our ECS can be one of the causes of OCD. They published details of these findings in a study in 2020. They claim that by stimulating our endocannabinoid system, we activate the CB1 receptor, which when active, significantly improves OCD. From previous articles, you may already know that CBD helps the endocannabinoid system function properly by binding to receptors.

From a professional perspective, we can imagine the effect of CBD on OCD as a complex interplay of cannabinoids and serotonin function. Studies have shown that CBD tends to modulate 5-HT system (serotonin) activity at several levels. And when serotonin is released, the CB1 receptor is also fully activated. Another important finding is that CBD directly affects chronic stress that occurs in brain areas such as the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and amygdala. And often, the result of OCD is excessive stress during the day. Participants in the study regularly used CBD products, based on CBD oils or CBD hemp capsules.

Another interesting study is linked to OCD. Here, researchers selected 14 adults who were diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and who had some experience with cannabis. Participants did not use CBD products but smoked cannabis directly. A difference was made between smoking a CBD cigarette, a THC cigarette, or a placebo cigarette. The results eventually showed that THC increased heart rate, CBD did not. A decrease in anxiety was observed with both CBD and THC.

Cannabis and OCD
CBD acts on the CB1 receptor, thereby reducing OCD symptoms
In conclusion, we can state that CBD has the potential to reduce primary OCD or its secondary symptoms.

What are other treatment options for OCD?

We probably can't talk about complete healing, but OCD can be mitigated so that you have your behavior under control. Besides the natural path with CBD, there are two other well-known alternatives:
  • Professional psychological therapy – cognitive behavioral therapy is most often used for this disorder.
  • Antidepressants – in the most severe cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed that regulate chemicals in the brain and thus help alleviate symptoms.
Whatever you decide to fight against OCD, remember that the process is important. A calm approach, proper dosing of medications or CBD products, and enough time.
