Causes of Red Cannabis Stems

Genetics

This is the most common cause. Cannabis simply has this coloration encoded in its genes, which is why the cannabis stems have developed this way. It's important to observe if the plant shows other signs that could indicate a potential problem. If not, you know it's a matter of genetics and you don't need to address it.

Pathogen Influence

Every environment has certain pathogens. In relation to plants, fungi attacking roots can be strong pathogens, killing leaves and causing rot. In such a case, cannabis may react by changing stem color. Usually, however, this signal is already too late to remedy. Dangerous pythium or fusarium are often responsible for these red stems.

Low Temperatures

Cannabis is said to be resilient, but regarding temperatures, you shouldn't go below 12°C when growing. Cannabis can experience temperature stress, causing stems to turn red. If you're struggling with low temperatures in indoor settings, you can try switching to HID lighting that provides more heat, or install heating mats to keep roots warm. If growing outdoors, the best solution is to move plants inside.

Inappropriate pH Level

Several growers face this issue. The hardest part is maintaining the correct soil pH level to prevent constant fluctuation. The ideal pH soil level for cannabis is between 6-7. You can easily check your soil's pH with a pH meter.

Light Intensity
