THC, CBD and Sex. Which Cannabinoid to Choose?

  • CBD and THC act completely differently, but also synergistically
  • CBD is more suitable before or after sex
  • THC enhances sensory perceptions
  • Microdoses of cannabis edibles are a very popular choice

In today's article, you can find answers to several interesting questions about the effects of THC and CBD and their impact on sexual experiences. Professional cannabis sommelier Andrew Mieure, owner of the widely respected cannabis dispensary Top Shelf Budtending and quality technician at Trichome Institute, which develops mechanisms for objective evaluation of medical cannabis quality, answers the following questions.

Andrew is simply an expert in the field. He also serves medical cannabis at cannabis bars at weddings and other major events, where he needs to be able to select the exact right strain for a given customer based on specific criteria and the experience the customer wants to be enriched with.

What are the differences between THC and CBD when it comes to enhancing sexual experiences?

Andrew: The more CBD we apply, the less euphoric the resulting state is. I would say that CBD would be best used as a tool to calm pre-sex nerves or as a "booster" after sex. Overall, I think CBD alone doesn't provide enough of a mental state change to positively or negatively affect the entire experience. For me, CBD is more of a tool I would use before or after sex.

During sex, THC is much more important, as it directly affects your mental state. THC can euphorically relax you and mentally prepare you for sex or directly enrich your sensory perceptions during sex. However, it's always absolutely essential to find the right combination and ratio of cannabinoids that works for you. If I serve myself too much THC, my heart races and I'm too out of it. It's very important to serve just the right amount of each.

Overall, it's best to aim for a mix of euphoria and relaxation without too strong a sedating effect. This way, you can calm down before sex with new partners and mitigate issues like erectile dysfunction that may stem from anxiety and nervousness.

Are there any other plant factors that can affect the resulting effect of CBD and THC?

Andrew: Terpenes play a huge role in the final effect. Cannabinoids are only one part of the overall picture. Skunky, forest, and earthy aromas cause sleepiness, while citrus aromas increase feelings of alertness and responsiveness. Floral terpenes can act relaxingly without sedating.

So far we've mainly discussed the effects of flowers, extracts and oils. But what about sex and cannabis edibles?

Andrew: Microdoses of THC in edibles can be absolutely amazing for sex. 1-3mg of THC can often be more than enough to achieve the desired effect. However, it's important to remember that edibles work very differently from person to person.

Interview author Ashley Manta largely agrees with Andrew: "I completely agree with Andrew's opinion on cannabis edibles - microdoses are ideal, but larger doses can turn your love plans upside down in quite an unexpected way. Always start with microdoses and wait at least two hours before the next application!

For me personally, Bubblegum Kush is a very suitable strain for intimate moments, after which I always feel a significant enhancement of touch sensations, leading to a surprisingly relaxing orgasm, quite different from my usual "teeth-clenching" climaxes. Bubblegum Kush is my choice for slower, loving sex.

A slightly different story is Sour Diesel, which is a popular choice for enhancing sex for both me and many of my friends. With Sour Diesel, you need to be a bit more careful, as larger doses personally trigger a slight paranoia for me. However, if you dose this powerful sativa correctly, it will flood you with a wave of energy that you can use, for example, during wilder play with your partner.
