THC from medical cannabis could treat ARDS - 2020 study

Whether we want it or not, covid-19 has become a pandemic that affects almost everyone. Recently, the so-called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has been associated with this high-risk disease, which has come into the spotlight of scientists searching for potential treatment options. Although it may seem incredible to many people, a recent study points to the fact that one of them could be the famous cannabinoid found in medicinal cannabis plants – THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Do we really have a new way to deal with coronavirus?

What do we know about THC?

THC is a well-known cannabinoid present in hemp plants. It is most often sought after by users for its psychoactive and intoxicating effects, which are accompanied by typical feelings of euphoria. However, it also has several therapeutic properties. THC can suppress chronic and acute pain, increase appetite, acts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant (reduces seizure frequency) and supports quality sleep. These effects find use in medicine, which the scientists in the following study have seized upon. Medicinal use of cannabis is known for thousands of years, but could we really connect cannabis and respiratory difficulties?

(Note: In the Czech Republic, cannabis with THC content higher than 0.3% is restricted by law. Legislation in other countries may differ. Please note that the article is for informational purposes only and does not encourage readers to use it.)

ARDS caused by covid-19

Covid-19 mainly affects the respiratory system, occasionally some surrounding organs. Only in severe forms can there be damage to the myocardium (7.2–17%) and acute kidney injury (2.9–15%). Patients showed low oxygenation index, which is absolutely related to respiratory diseases such as ARDS. CT results show involvement of both lungs – i.e. both show scattered and severe damage. Some cases initially do not show such serious symptoms, but over time there may be a relatively rapid deterioration, so patients need to be carefully monitored.

If acute respiratory distress syndrome is caused by covid-19, its symptoms are recognizable approximately after the same time as other causes – about 9 days. Some doctors spoke of a 7-day period when a potential infected person should be monitored, but authors of newer studies appeal to a longer period (at least 10 days). The most likely cause of failure in coronavirus disease is respiratory failure as a result of respiratory problems.

Currently, there is no 100% cure for ARDS, therefore mortality is around 40%. Usually, medications from the corticosteroid group are prescribed, but in patients with covid-19, other complications may occur. This is a somewhat dangerous treatment method that should be thoroughly investigated.
