The Importance of pH in Cannabis Cultivation

Some growers do not pay much attention to pH value when growing cannabis. However, this is a mistake, because pH directly affects the entire growing process, and today we will tell you how.

What is pH value?

pH value expresses the current level of acidity or alkalinity. pH has a scale with respective degrees from 1 to 14. The neutral level is considered to be the middle, around 7 pH. Generally, the lower the pH value, the more acidic the substance (for example, vinegar). In contrast, a rising pH level indicates that the value is alkaline. Naturally, soap has a higher pH value.

The correct pH level is usually degree 7

Why is the optimal pH level important for cannabis?

All plants without exception need to absorb nutrients for their life. Regular intake of macronutrients and minerals is crucial. However, they are only capable of this if the pH level is normal. For cannabis grown in soil, the most optimal pH level is around 6 to 7. If you do not control the pH level, and it fluctuates from lower to higher values and vice versa, the cannabis will not absorb any nutrients. The optimal pH level can change with different growing techniques. Hydroponics requires a slightly lower pH than soil cultivation.

What pH levels are ideal when growing cannabis?

As we mentioned above, it depends on the conditions and techniques used to grow cannabis. But we can briefly summarize it as follows:

Soil cultivation: 6.0 – 7.0

For soil, this pH level represents an ideal. The advantage is that when watering, you can always aim for a different pH value that you currently need to achieve. Compost from organic matter or natural fertilizers also help maintain the correct soil pH level.

Hydroponic cultivation: 5.5 – 6.5

In hydroponic cultivation, it is necessary to allow the pH level to naturally fluctuate.

Moreover, minerals such as calcium and magnesium are absorbed only if the pH level is higher than 6.

How to test your pH level?

Basically, you have a choice of two devices that are most commonly used:

  • Droplet test
  • Digital pH meter

From our own experience, we can say that the digital pH meter is more accurate and offers a better overview of pH levels. Remember that the pH level is always measured before adding fertilizer and other minerals to the soil. Also, do not forget to test the pH level of the water used for cannabis watering.

How to adjust the pH level when you find it is not optimal?

You just did a pH level test and found it is too high? Don't despair, nothing is lost yet. Try adding a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice to the watering. This will increase acidity. You can also mix equal parts of vinegar and lemon juice and add a little water. Then mix into the watering until you reach the optimal pH level.

If you are troubled by low pH, meaning high acidity, use liquid dolomitic limestone. If you don't want to find a remedy quickly, add baking soda. However, this will only help temporarily.

Benefits of maintaining optimal pH level when growing

Every effort brings its fruits. Cannabis will reward you by maintaining the correct pH level, for example:

  • Healthier plants
  • Successful and healthy growth
  • Higher quality and larger yield

And a bonus advantage you will gain is overall control over cultivation. So don't be indifferent, but control your cannabis during cultivation. If you haven't started growing yet, and are just thinking about it - now is the right time to decide. Grab your feminized, autoflowering or regular seeds.
