The abbreviation THC and its meaning are known to almost everyone today. However, most people associate it with completely negative stereotypical properties, such as the feeling of "high", hallucinations, and many others. This remarkable substance has a much longer and more interesting history than one might think. Although THC is illegal, it can help with physical and psychological difficulties through its effects. Today, there are countless diverse facts about it, some are entirely clear, others less so. We have selected 10 interesting facts about THC that you may not have encountered yet.

1. Marijuana Has Been Used by Humans for at Least 12,000 Years

According to the book "Marijuana: The First Twelve Thousand Years" by E. L. Abel, the history of hemp dates back to 10,000 years before Christ. It belongs to the group of the oldest plants cultivated by humans. For perspective, marijuana was grown around the same period when grinding grains like wheat or barley began in the Iranian Zagros mountain region. Further evidence of hemp's age is confirmed by Siberian burial mounds older than 5,000 years, in which ash with hemp seed remnants was found.

In ancient China, marijuana was commonly used for medicinal purposes. The very first written mentions date back to 2737 BC. According to the text, Emperor Shen Nung regularly used marijuana and kept careful records of its health benefits for humans. From the 2nd millennium BC, hemp began to travel around the world. American colonial states Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Virginia were the first places in the USA where hemp was cultivated since the 16th century. From there, it began to spread to the rest of the country in the early 20th century, which also brought the first forms of herb abuse. It is here that the most diverse negative stereotypes associated with marijuana use began to emerge, which unfortunately persist to this day.

2. Zero - The Number of Deaths from Marijuana Overdose

As mentioned above, marijuana has been used for a very long time. All the more impressive and positive is the fact that mortality caused by excessive use of this plant remains firmly at zero. It is more than likely that this number will not change. According to studies conducted in this area, a marijuana user would have to smoke between 20-40 thousand joints of average size within a few hours for there to be even a 50% risk of death from the toxicity of active substances in marijuana. Overdosing on THC is truly impossible, both from a theoretical and practical perspective. However, in the Czech Republic, all THC products are prohibited and can only be obtained with a medical prescription, and only in serious cases.

3. THC Is Just One of Several Hundred Substances in Marijuana

During research between 1963-1964, Raphael Mechoulam declared THC the most famous hemp compound. In this remarkable plant, there are more than 500 other compounds, of which at least 65 are cannabinoids, such as the increasingly popular CBD. Some estimates claim that hemp is even richer in cannabinoids and contains up to 110 of these compounds. Although some time has passed since the 1960s and research has advanced, the healing effects of most hemp compounds are still not fully known.
