CBD Interactions with Other Medications: What You Should Know?
Cannabidiol (CBD) has made its way into our shampoos, creams, ointments, and for some, using this cannabinoid has become a daily ritual. The reason many people choose this supplement is its abilities to treat a wide range of different diseases and health problems. Despite all its positives, however, one rather concerning information about the interaction between CBD and some other medications has emerged. In today's article, we will objectively summarize all the available facts on this topic.
How Does Our Body Metabolize Medications?
You've probably heard someone say they have a "fast" or "slow" metabolism. In other words, this statement could be defined as the number of calories a person needs for all body processes to function properly. However, we will discuss metabolism as a way of breaking down substances in the body, specifically in the intestines and liver – this process is known as the first-pass metabolism.
Most drug substances are broken down by the liver, whose goal is to transport the necessary compounds to other parts of the body where they are needed. Enzymes play a crucial role here, which puts this theory into practice – i.e., metabolizing food substances into metabolites that are further used, for example, as fuel for cellular processes or as building material for systems or tissues. Just as we know food metabolism, there is also drug metabolism, which works on the same principle. We will examine it in more detail in the next part of the article.
CBD: Basic Information
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many substances known as cannabinoids, originating from medical cannabis. It has gained the attention of experts and the public with its properties that are useful in treating many diseases or health problems, and this is without any intoxicating effect. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible not only for homeostasis, or cellular balance, but also for many other physical and mental processes.
