How long does THC remain
Are you wondering how long marijuana is detectable in blood, urine, or saliva? THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive substance in cannabis that makes you "high". Even though the effects have long since subsided and you feel completely sober, THC can remain detectable in the body for weeks to months.
How THC Works in the Body
After consuming cannabis, THC quickly enters the bloodstream. In the liver, it breaks down into about 80 different metabolites, with THC-COOH being key – an inactive form that is stored in body fat and gradually excreted through urine and feces. The liver is the main organ involved in THC breakdown in the body.

THC Detection Methods – Overview
Saliva Test
Detection Time:
- Occasional user: 1–3 days
- Regular user: up to 3 days
Saliva test looks for pure THC, not its metabolites. Often used in roadside checks for quick detection.
Blood Test
Detection Time:
- After inhalation: a few hours to 24 hours
- Regular users: 2–7 days
Blood test is most accurate for determining current intoxication. Studies have shown that THC can be detected in long-term users even after 7 days.
Urine Test (Most Common Method)
Detection Time:
- One-time use: 3–7 days
- Regular use: 10–30 days
- Chronic users: up to 60–90 days
Urine tests detect the metabolite THC-COOH, not active THC. This method is most widespread but gradually being phased out because the inactive metabolite does not indicate current impairment.
Hair Test
Detection Time: up to 90 days (sometimes longer)
Hair grows approximately 1 cm per month, so hair follicle analysis can reveal consumption from the last 3 months. This method is very expensive and almost never used for routine THC testing.
