Cannabigerol. What is CBG? Growing CBG from hemp seeds.

Cannabigerol or "CBG" is one of many cannabinoids produced by the hemp plant. CBG is the non-acidic version of cannabigerolic acid. It is a so-called mother cannabinoid that gives rise to many subsequently important compounds, such as THC and CBD. Therefore, CBG is currently considered one of the most important cannabinoid compounds. If CBG production can be controlled, it may open doors to new varieties with even more active substances.

During hemp plant growth, CBG is an important precursor. Without CBG, the hemp plant cannot continue synthesizing key components like THC and CBD. Because CBG serves as a building block for THC and CBD production, less than 1% CBG usually remains in the plant at harvest. In many hemp varieties, the final CBG level is lower than 0.1%. Hemp must be able to produce CBG in large quantities to subsequently produce THC and CBD in high amounts. CBG is more than just a building block for THC and CBD. It is presumed that CBG itself also has important therapeutic effects.

Medical Use of CBG. CBG and Colitis/Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Colitis is one of the medical areas where CBG is currently being investigated, especially its anti-inflammatory properties. This research work published in The Oxford Academic foundation for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases shows that CBG was likely the most effective cannabinoid. This research article also shows promising results of CBG on colitis/inflammatory bowel disease.

Neuroprotective Properties of CBG. CBG and Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease is a progressive and degenerative disease affecting the human neurological system. The use of CBG as a neuroprotective substance has been investigated. From this research work it follows that: "In conclusion, our results open new research possibilities for using CBG, alone or in combination with other phytocannabinoids or therapies, to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease."

CBG. A Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid.

CBG is not psychoactive. However, it is not yet clear how CBG may interact with other cannabinoids. In other words, we are not yet sure whether CBG has an effect on amplifying or attenuating the effects of other cannabinoids in a process known as the entourage effect (synergy).

Hemp Seeds Rich in CBG.

Hemp experts have already developed hemp seed varieties rich in CBG. These varieties have absolutely zero THC content in the flowers. This could mean that the first CBG-rich varieties will be classified as a new type of "light hemp". CBG follows in the footsteps of CBD. Both are non-psychoactive cannabinoids. Hemp flowers rich in CBD with low THC content have become known as cannabis light. These flowers have proven very popular in countries like Switzerland, Italy, and others. They can be openly and legally purchased in tobacco shops, herbal stores, health food stores, and head shops. "Cannabis light" buds rich in CBD look and smell like real cannabis. Some people smoke (or vape) these flowers as an alternative to tobacco. Some people have found that vaping/smoking CBD hemp flowers reduces their craving for a joint or cigarette. Others discover that CBD offers useful benefits for them or their health problems. What will CBG-rich hemp flowers be used for? And if they are completely THC-free, will this allow the flowers to achieve mainstream popularity?

What is the Use of CBG-Rich Hemp?

One of the big questions for CBG-rich hemp is where its broadest use will ultimately be found. However, answers are difficult to predict until CBG-rich hemp becomes available to medical users. Only then will we likely begin to understand the common conditions CBG can most easily help with. When CBD-rich hemp was introduced in the previous decade, no one really expected CBD to become as popular as it ultimately did. And no one anticipated the wide range of areas where CBD would prove useful. Will this be the case with cannabigerol? Will all future new cannabinoids be as interesting as CBD, or will some cannabinoids have less value for medical science and researchers? Interest in the medical use of hemp has never been so great.

The potential future use of CBG will only be revealed with time. Feminized CBG-rich seeds have only been available for a short time, and answers will follow soon after seed release. Exciting times are approaching for the hemp community as hemp breeding reaches new levels of sophistication. New hemp substances are becoming available to the home growing community that we could previously only read about. Exciting times await the hemp community.
