CBD for Treating Osteoarthritis in Dogs
About the desperate struggle with mobility issues in dogs, anyone who has gone through such an experience could probably speak. This problem primarily affects large dogs. It impacts magnificent molossoid breeds like Bordeaux Mastiff, Bullmastiff, Brazilian Fila, Neapolitan and Spanish Mastiff, or Pyrenean Mountain Dog, but also more common breeds like German Shepherd or Golden and Labrador Retriever, though this is just a small fraction of breeds predisposed to mobility problems accompanied by significant pain. Large dogs do not close the circle, similar suffering is often experienced by owners of smaller dog breeds. Given the side effects of standard veterinary preparations, the question arises whether they could be alternated with CBD-based products.

Studies on CBD Effects on Dog Osteoarthritis
CBD research related to animals significantly lags behind human research. However, this doesn't mean it doesn't exist. In a 2018 study, the safety and analgesic efficacy of cannabidiol was examined in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. Dogs were orally administered CBD oil (2 mg/kg) or placebo at twelve-hour intervals, with the placebo consisting of olive, anise, and mint oil mixture. Initially, an 8 mg/kg dose was applied, but after comparing biological half-life, it was abandoned due to cost and impractical dosing. Further evaluation thus concerns 2 mg/kg.
The study used technical hemp, so results are significant for extracts with higher CBD concentrations "at the expense" of other cannabinoids and trace terpenes. This means results cannot be generalized, especially considering the wide range of CBD oils extracted from various hemp varieties.
